Death of first female MLC

Tributes are being paid to former MHK and MLC Betty Hanson who has died at the age of 89.

Mrs Hanson, who passed away at Elder Grange nursing home in Douglas yesterday, was the first woman to be elected onto the Legislative Council.

A teacher at St John’s primary school and then Douglas high school, she was MHK for West Douglas from 1974 for eight years until 1982 when she was elected an MLC.

Her funeral will take place on Saturday, July 5 at St Thomas' church (pictured) in Douglas.
