Prison official defends 'decent' standards

It may be new, clean and far more comfortable than its predecessor, but it's certainly not a holiday camp or hotel.

The views of Prison Governor Alison Gomme and her Acting Deputy Colin Ring when quizzed about the Jurby prison on Manx Radio today.

A number of callers to Talking Heads said being put behind bars should be an unpleasant experience, to deter people from reoffending.

But Mr Ring said inmates, not to mention the facility's staff, were entitled to decent surroundings (audio file attached):
