Self inquest - accidental death

by isleofman.com 21st July 2008
The Coroner has recorded a verdict of accidental death on an 18 year old motorcylist.

Darren Self died on December 19th 2007 after an accident at the top of the Ballahutchin in Marown.

Michael Moyle stressed that the inquest was NOT a criminal trial, and any charges resulting from the incident would be dealt with by a different court.

Another motorist, Robert Quayle, has been charged with driving without due care and attention.

The inquest heard from Captain of the Parish of Marown, Charles Fargher, who told the hearing that he'd lived at Ballafreer House at the top of the Ballahutchin for 20 years and he had extensively improved the access from the property on to the road after consultation with the Department of Transport. He had insisted that a mirror was placed, at his own expense, on top of the hedge opposite the entrance to his house, and he and his family always used it.

He said exiting from his property had always been a challenge, which had become more acute due to the increase and speed of traffic which accelerated quickly up the hill when out of the 30 mph limit by Trollaby lane at the bottom of the hill.

He said as Captain of the Parish he had received several complaints about speeding motorists and had been trying to have a speed limit imposed, but was at a loss to know what else he could do to stress to the DoT the dangers posed by speeding motorists on the hill.

He said Mr Quayle visited his home regularly and he always advised visitors to be extra careful when leaving.

PC William Radcliffe said it was impossible to say how fast Mr Self had been travelling as the speedometer was locked at 56 miles per hour

Mr Moyle recorded a verdict of accidental death.
