Electricity costs going up 16%

The cost of electricity is going up - by more than 16%.

Householders will see a rise in tarriffs from the 1st September.

The cause of the 16.3% hike?

A combination of higher raw fuel prices - and continued extra charges to meet the MEA's loans deficit.

That payback was agreed by Tynwald in 2005.

But coming with so many other increases in the cost of living, the news is another blow for hard-pressed consumers.

Treasury Minister Allan Bell (pictured) says there have been no rises in electricity prices for a year - thanks to forward buying.

But he says world prices have changed for the worse in recent times:
