Overweight vehicles claim

by isleofman.com 6th August 2008
The Department of Transport is facing an allegation its workers are being ordered to allow overweight vehicles onto the Island's roads.

The Union UNITE has written to the DoT to seek clarification of the law.

Regional Industrial Organiser Mick Hewer says a worker raised concerns that certain trailers leaving Douglas Port were over the 38 tonne limit.

Mr Hewer (pictured) says it's a matter of public safety, and is disappointed his concerns haven't been noted by the department (audio file attached):

Manx Radio has contacted the Department of Transport and has been told the Minister, Chief Executive and Director of Highways are all either off the Island or on leave.
