Freak accident in Greenland

by isleofman.com 8th August 2008
A teacher from QE 2 High School is recovering at home with a broken leg after a freak accident during an action trip to Greenland.

He was one of six staff leading students on their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award expedition, when he fell from a log on the bank of a fjord.

His journey home by air ambulance became an adventure in itself, after the flight was diverted to Liverpool because of low cloud over the Isle of Man.

The accident happened on July 21, as members of the school party loaded their kayaks on the fjord in western Greenland for a third day's paddling.

The teacher, who hasn't been named, had stepped onto a log to reach a higher bank but lost his balance when it rolled away.

The alarm was raised via a satellite phone loaned by Manx Telecom. The teacher was carried up the rocks and taken to a nearby hospital, where he spent six days being treated for a fractured tibia.

A Learjet was laid on to bring him home but it was diverted to Liverpool where the teacher spent another seven days in hospital.

He finally made it back to the Island last Saturday.

The high staffing ratio meant the party was able to continue the trip, and they are due home on Saturday.
