Over the counter Chlamydia treatment

Anyone in the Isle of Man who suffers from the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia will now have much easier access to treatment.

A drug is going to be available over the pharmacy counter rather than on prescription.

Chalmydia infection rates are increasing on the Island, especially for those under the age of 25. If left untreated, it can cause serious complications including infertility.

All those who go to the chemist must have tested positive for the infection using an approved standard test, and they will be encouraged to inform their sexual partners.

Secretary of the Isle of Man Branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Charles Flynn has welcomed the move.

He says the drug won't just be handed out, people will be asked a number of questions in a confidential environment to ensure the treatment is suitable for them (audio file attached):
