New prison up and running

It's the dawn of another era for prison services in the Isle of Man.

90 inmates are waking up in new surroundings, following the move from the Victoria Road facility to the ?41 million pound gaol in Jurby.

The move started first thing yesterday morning, but was only made public mid-afternoon for security reasons.

The whole operation took months in the planning, and saw 80 officers spread between the two sites, police escorted secure vehicles and detailed searches of premises old and new.

Prison Governor Alison Gomme (pictured) says the new facility is about much more than simply housing convicted criminals:
