Cavendish takes eighth spot

The Olympic dream is over for Manxman Mark Cavendish – for this year at least.

The 23-year-old from Laxey bidding for Olympic glory in Beijing in the Madison event had to settle for eighth place with team-mate Bradley Wiggins.

The duo struggled to gain a foothold in the 200-lap race with Wiggins showing signs of fatigue after already claiming two gold medals at the Games.

Argentina took the gold medal with Spain taking silver and Russia bronze.

Among the thousands of Islanders watching the big race was former Tourism Minister, Onchan MHK Adrian Earnshaw (audio file attached):
