Ferry fuel surcharge under scrutiny

A local pressure group wants the issue of the Steam Packet's fuel surcharges to be aired in public.

TravelWatch believes the surcharge mechanism is not an appropriate way of dealing with high fuel prices.

From September 1st the freight fuel surcharge will quadruple from ?2 per metre to ?8, while the passenger surcharge will double to ?5 per single journey.

TravelWatch says it's disappointed this announcement doesn't give any indication of steps being taken by the company to mitigate the effects of increased costs.
