Liberal Vannin Party leader Peter Karran says reform of the Legislative Council should be made one of the main issues at the next Isle of Man general election, if the matter isn't resolved before polling takes place.
While welcoming proposals by Middle MHK Martyn Quayle to publicly elect MLCs, he believes members should be elected on an Island-wide basis rather than by constituencies, and that MLCs shouldn’t be allowed to form part of the executive function of government.
Mr Karran says the council has to remain a revising chamber, instead of dealing with constituency matters, and as he considers MLCs to be equal to MHKs, they should also have a public mandate (audio file attached):
