Head welcomes tougher holiday rules

Tougher rules are on the way for parents who take their children out of school to go on holiday.

From this term, headteachers can only authorise absences where there are 'exceptional domestic circumstances', such as a family bereavement or trauma.

There is growing concern about the number of youngsters missing lessons and the effect it has on their education.

While some parents can't take time off work during school holidays, many others choose to go away in term-time, because it's cheaper.

Headteacher at Ramsey Grammar David Trace says he has some sympathy with parents, but tougher measures are needed:
