Chef says more thought can save money

by isleofman.com 1st October 2008
You can still eat healthily, despite large price hikes in the cost of staple foods this year.

A recent report claims there's been a rise of 30% in the price of fruit and vegetables, including such items as potatoes, onions and carrots.

Poor weather has affected the local harvest, and it's claimed some familes could be struggling to feed themselves well.

However, local chef David 'Butch' Buttery believes people just need to give more thought to how they shop and cook: "If you want to eat healthily you have to think about how you shop, and how you cook and what it is you eat.

"A lot of people's idea of eating healthy is to go down to Marks and Spencer's and fill their trolley up with packets of things that say 'healthy eating' on them. If you took a trolley full of that at about ?150, took away all the packaging and laid out what you've actually got, you could do the same thing for about a tenth of the cost. A lot of it is about people's attitude to food, this so called convenience food .... it's just lazy, it's because they can't be bothered to cook."
