MHKs want action to protect deposits

A group of back-bench MHKs is calling for more financial cover for local people's bank deposits.

They are proposing 100 per cent backing up to ?35,000 - in line with the United Kingdom - and for the scheme to be linked to any future rises there.

The MHKs also believe funding should come from the private sector and not taxpayers' money.

The Treasury says it's already looking into changing the Isle of Man Depositors' Compensation Scheme, but Rushen MHK Juan Watterson (pictured) says action is needed now:
