Dyslexia expert visits the Island

A leading authority on dyslexia has been showing parents and teachers in the Isle of Man how they can best help youngsters who suffer from the condition.

Dyslexia is often thought to hamper a child's ability to read and write, but Ann Henderson specialises in a form of dyslexia which affects the learning of mathematics.

She says understanding of dyscalculia is years behind literacy dyslexia.

Last night she gave a presentation to parents and today at Keyll Darree she was the guest speaker at a seminar for education professionals.

She says the system needs to find new ways of assessing ability, not based on exams (audio file attached):
