Hard times for fishermen

by isleofman.com 21st October 2008
It's been a tough year for the Island's fishing industry, with the price of fuel eating into profits.

The cost of running a boat is significantly higher than 12 months ago and, with banks restricting who they lend money to, it's thought some fishing businesses may struggle to survive.

The Isle of Man has a lower fishing quota than some European countries, which means Manx-caught fish can seem expensive next to imports.

Chief executive of the Manx Fish Producers' Organisation Tom Bryan-Brown (pictured) can't see an end to the struggle. He told Manx Radio:

"Fuel has moved up in percentage terms horrendously in the last year or 18 months.

"It has come back a bit, but if you win some you lose some and unfortunately, with the reduction in the price of fuel, the ever tightening credit from the banks is causing more misery for the fishing industry.

"We had a very, very poor summer with the queenies, and it's looking like this is going to carry on to the scallop season as well."
