New subsidy scheme 'only way forward'

Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne says he is disappointed some farmers aren’t happy with proposed changes to the Island’s subsidy scheme.

Earlier this week, a group calling itself Farmers for Productive Farming said it was opposed to farmers being given cash for looking after the land. Up to now subsidies have been paid on the basis of food produced.

Mr Gawne says the industry is supportive of the scheme which will be discussed in detail by Tynwald towards the end of the year.

He also believes the changes are the only way forward for farming in the Island:
