P50 inventor will be remembered today

by isleofman.com 28th October 2008
The funeral of a Manx inventor and engineer will take place this morning (Tuesday), a year to the day after his most famous creation appeared on BBC's television's Top Gear.

Cyril Cannell designed the Peel P50 which was manufactured by his company, Peel Engineering, in the 1960s.

Only 80 of the miniature cars were ever produced, one of which is on display in the Manx Transport Museum in Peel, down the road from the factory where it was made (see picture).

The Museum's Secretary Sam Knight thinks the P50 would fit comfortably into today's car market (audio file attached):

About 20 of the 80 P50s manufactured remain.
