Education bill ready for legislators

Measures to tackle truancy and to allow teachers to physically restrain violent pupils, and search those suspected of carrying offensive weapons, are some of the issues dealt with in a new bill.

The bill, which went out to consultation earlier this year, would give teachers new powers and protections under law to help them discipline children in the Island’s schools, and is now ready to go before the branches of the legislature.

Detention and the employment of children are also included.

Education minister Anne Craine says there are gaps within existing legislation, while director of education John Cain (pictured) says truancy remains a problem:
