The Positive Action Group is calling for video cameras to be allowed into Tynwald.

The organisation says thousands of people around the world can already watch the proceedings of the UK government – and a Manx version of parliamentary TV could only make our political system more transparent.

The PAG wrote to the government a year ago to ask for webcams to be installed in the Tynwald Chamber.

Now, it’s renewing its calls to broadcast Tynwald sittings as well as select committee hearings.

Making the call, chairman of the Positive Action Group Roger Tomlinson says internet webcasting is relatively inexpensive.

He says with 60 per cent of Island homes now having broadband installed, people would be able to find out exactly what their elected representatives do.

And after discovering 30 local authorities in the UK currently use such a system to broadcast their meetings, he says it’s time the Manx government followed suit.

The PAG has now written again to the Tynwald Management Committee to repeat its request.
