Call for more control over Manx waters

The Isle of Man's scallop industry will soldier on, for the next few months at least.

That's the verdict from the chief executive of the Manx Fish Producers Association, Tom Bryan Brown, after a bid by the Island to extend the curfew for scallop fishing was blocked by Scotland.

It's already illegal to fish between 9pm and 5am, but the Island wanted a 12 hour curfew, from 6pm.

The proposal needed the support of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, but with one vote against the curfew couldn't be imposed.

Mr Bryan Brown (pictured) says it highlights a need for the Isle of Man to have more control over its territorial waters.

But despite that failure, and the increasing pressures of the credit crunch, he remains confident the Manx scallop industry can still hold its own:
