Hard-hitting poster campaign launched

by isleofman.com 6th November 2008
"Don't take mummy's pension" and "Don't take daddy's pension".

Those are the two stark messages at the centre of a hard hitting campaign by a union in the Isle of Man, highlighting concerns over possible changes to public sector pension schemes.

The phrases appear on posters launched by Prospect.

Negotiations Officer for the Union Angela Moffatt says the campaign accurately reflects feelings in the organisation.

She told Manx Radio:

"We have taken enormous time and effort to look at this from our members' point of view.

"We've gone out and sought their feedback and reactions and the fact is you can't scaremonger when people are actually scared already.

"We feel that this campaign and the issues that we have put forward throughout it are actually an accurate reflection of how our people are feeling."

The Manx government has said on a number of occasions that no decisions have been made in relation to changes to public sector pensions in the Isle of Man.

The review of public service pensions is due to be debated in Tynwald before the end of the year, with existing scheme members concerned about a possible increase in pension age, and a reduction in benefits.

"Public sector pension cuts will change the future for: hundreds of mainly women part-time workers, single parent families, and families reliant on one income or on a public sector pension.

"Pension entitlement is vital for families already on low incomes because of child care responsibilities."
