Minister says "think Manx"

by isleofman.com 13th November 2008
Treasury Minister Allan Bell is urging local residents to use Manx bank notes whenever they can.

He was replying to a House of Keys question from North Douglas MHK John Houghton, in which he revealed the value of notes in circulation had been increased by ?5.6 million since the start of the financial year.

The Isle of Man Bank acts as government’s appointed agent and adds or withdraws notes from circulation to meet demand.

Mr Bell says having more Manx money in circulation, particularly in the current climate, can only be of benefit.

He explained:

"A lot of people don't realise that government actually makes money on having a large number of Manx notes in circulation.

"We have been trying for some time to try and persuade the banks and shops in particular, and of course the local population, to use Manx notes where ever possible.

"The banks, to a certain extent, have been cooperating. All the "holes in the wall", for example, have Manx notes now, except for the ones at the airport.

"I would like to see the Isle of Man emulate what goes on elsewhere and for everyone, almost as a national duty now to look for their own currency, look for Manx notes, ask for Manx notes in banks, in the post offices, in the shops and let's try and get this figure back up again."
