A ?5.6 million increase in the value of currency in circulation since the start of the financial year is causing concern for a member of the House of Keys.
The figure was revealed to the House by Treasury Minister Allan Bell, who said having more Manx money in use benefitted the government.
However, North Douglas MHK John Houghton (pictured) believes it makes a clear statement and is vowing to keep an eye on the situation.
He told Manx Radio:
"Some people have lost confidence in banks and we know that right across the United Kingdom sales of home safes have really escalated.
"It simply means that well over ?5 million has gone out of circulation and I'm just wondering whether or not there are people who are taking what they see as the safe way through - although I think it's dangerous in terms of security - and are holding large sums of money at home.
"That's 500 hundred people holding the equivalent of ?10,000 per person, under the mattress, and that's a rather dangerous move if people are thinking of doing that."
