Union hopes for structured pension talks

by isleofman.com 14th November 2008
A senior union official hopes positive dialogue can ease concerns over the Manx government’s review of public sector pensions.

Deputy general secretary of Prospect Mike Clancy (pictured) travelled to the Island yesterday for talks with colleagues in the civil service and the Manx Electricity Authority.

He says his union has been able to influence the United Kingdom government in certain areas and believes a similar approach could be taken here.

He told Manx Radio:

"We have to be sure we have a structured way of engaging with government on the issue.

"We are hoping their proposals will be influenced by the initial feedback and reaction we have had from members and citizens generally, who are obviously concerned about anything that will reduce their retirement income.

"I think if we can start from a basis that we are going to establish a consensus and a structure to the discussions, that's fine.

"This is not a subject that should be rushed at, it has deep implications not only for the people concerned, but also for the economy of the Island."

Story to feature on Friday's Mandate.
