Award for air traffic controller

by isleofman.com 19th November 2008
An Air Traffic Controller at Ronaldsway Airport has been recognised for the part he played in an emergency landing earlier this year.

Peter Faragher has been given a Safety Award by the Guild of Air Traffic Controllers after he helped the crew of a Flybe plane, which had to land in the Isle of Man because of suspected smoke in the cockpit and cabin.

The plane was on its way from Manchester to Belfast City on August 1.

At the time Ronaldsway's instrument landing system was temporarily out of service, because of the runway project works.

With a low cloud-base sitting over the airport, Peter provided the crew with a "surveillance radar approach" which enabled them to perform a safe emergency landing.

President of GATCO Rob Marshall said Peter demonstrated excellent skills, and his calm handling of the situation assisted the crew to land without delay.

But Peter is remaining modest, saying it's all part of the job (play attached audio file):
