DoT to keep 'tighter rein' on Packet

by isleofman.com 19th November 2008
A report into the running of the Steam Packet and how it serves the Isle of Man will not simply gather dust.

That guarantee comes from the Chairman of the Select Committee which carried out the investigation, Speaker of the House of Keys Steve Rodan.

Tynwald debated the report for more than four hours yesterday, during which there was criticism of the company's profit margins and fare structures, and the lack of courtesy of its staff.

Mr Rodan (pictured) says Tynwald has agreed the Department of Transport needs to keep a tighter rein on the company and believes the travelling public will feel the benefit.

He told Manx Radio:

"I hope it will be seen that the report has been very thorough and far reaching, and fair to all parties.

"We certainly have got out into the public domain a lot of information I can well understand the company would rather we didn't publish, such as the accounts and the profit levels.

"But it is a healthy thing in a domocracy, particularly when there is an exclusive agreement of this sort and a matter of public interest that the public know the full facts.

"I think as a committee we have done our best to make sure that is the case."

Manx Radio has made a number of requests for a comment from the Steam Packet, but the company has not responded.
