Champ 'had to be put down'

There was no alternative to destroying a dog which was illegal in the Isle of Man, according to the Department of Agrigulture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Champ, who was thought to be an American Pit Bull, but that has been disputed in some quarters, was put down yesterday evening (Wednesday).

A campaign had been mounted to save the animal and find it an alternative home in the Republic of Ireland.

But DAFF Member David Callister says destroying the animal was the only option given the tests that'd been carried out (audio file attached):
