Energy policy group formed

by isleofman.com 30th November 2008

Ensuring the security of energy supplies for future generations in the Isle of Man is the challenge facing the new Energy Policy Group, formed by government.

The grouping is a 'joined-up' venture - involving several government departments and the MEA.

In the longer term it's hoped businesses, voluntary groups and individuals will all play a part.

The group is to be chaired by the Trade and Industry Minister David Cretney.

Mr Cretney (pictured), as chairman of the Energy Policy Group, will bring together political members and officers from across government, including his own department, the Department of Agriculture and the Treasury.

The team will consider ideas and solutions for a sustainable Island energy policy in an era of climate change.

Mr Cretney says efforts in recent years to use the environment sustainably have achieved much.

Statistics show that in the 20 years since 1986 when the population grew by 28 per cent and national income by 200 per cent, carbon emissions increased by only six per cent.

On the agenda for the new group in its first phase: setting renewable energy targets and reviewing building regulations where they relate to energy issues.

There are also plans to establish an 'energy Doctor' service in partnership with Age Concern.
