Stub it out and bin it!

Stub it, bin it, no Butts!

That’s the message of an Island-wide campaign to reduce cigarette litter which is being launched this month.

It aims to remind smokers that dropping cigarette butts in the street is an offence, attracting a minimum ?50 fixed penalty notice up to a maximum fine of ?2,500.

It’s been co-ordinated by Smokefree Mann and Douglas Council.

A survey carried out after the smoke-free legislation came into force in England revealed cigarette litter had increased by 43 per cent but a poster campaign significantly reduced that figure.

Council leader David Christian said cigarette butts are a blight on the town and the Council is committed to making every effort to rid the streets of what he calls ‘unsightly and unhealthy litter’.
