No sanctuary for squirrels

The Department of Agriculture has no plans to bring red squirrels into the Island in the near future.

The animal has been under considerable threat in Britain in recent years, with its numbers being reduced by the spread of the more aggressive grey squirrel.

But in answer to a House of Keys question from Peel MHK Tim Crookall, Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne said it was a policy of his department not to bring in non-native species, and this was unlikely to change (play attached audio file):
