MEA runs checks after power station fire

by isleofman.com 11th December 2008
Inspections of all the Manx Electricity Authority's diesel engines are taking place today, following a fire in Peel Power station yesterday evening.

The incident was caused by a fuel pipe on one of the units splitting while the engine was being used to generate power.

The building was evacuated as a precaution and the fire was extinguished by the automatic deluge system at the station, without any serious damage to the fabric of the building.

Chief executive of the MEA Aston Lewis (pictured) says checks will be made, but the system is designed to cope with such incidents.

He told Manx Radio:

"All of our diesel engines are the same model, so we will have a look at all of those.

"These are pipes which are right up on the very top of the engines, so inspecting them is not very difficult.

"We can take individual units out, we can shut units down, and we keep the supplies onto the Island, (which is) a very important feature for us."
