OFT warns against 'hard sell' warranties

Think twice before spending your hard-earned cash on extended warranties this Christmas.

That's the message from the Office of Fair Trading to anyone facing the 'hard sell' for warranties, after buying electrical items.

The insurance cover is offered on a wide range of goods, from TVs, cameras and laptops to kitchen appliances.

The OFT says these items will normally come with a guarantee for at least 12 months, and buying expensive additional cover can be a waste of money.

Chief Tranding Standards Officer John Peet (pictured) says shoppers who are tempted should look closely at what is being offered:
