Public 'should have more say on budget'

by isleofman.com 12th February 2009
Could budget proposals be open to public and parliamentary debate before they are presented?

That’s certainly what a Rushen MHK is hoping.

Juan Watterson (pictured) wants all parliamentarians to have a greater say in and more time to scrutinise the budget prior to voting on it.

Next month in Tynwald, he will seek leave to present a private member’s bill which would allow the Treasury Minister to announce the provisions of the budget, which would then be open to Tynwald comment and public scrutiny for two months before being voted on.

So a significant departure from the process which currently exists?
