The straight-talking Liberal Democrat MP Dr Vince Cable will visit the Island on 23rd May to give a talk to the Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club. Dr Cable, MP for Twickenham and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, has been credited with predicting the current downturn in the global economy, and the talk follows on the heels of his new book on the subject, 'The Storm' (published in March 2009).
Once Chief Economist at Shell International, Cable (pictured) has also been Head of Economics at the Royal Institute of International Affairs. From 1999-2003, he was Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. A prolific broadcaster and columnist (notably for The Economist), his grasp of economic affairs is equalled by his interest in climate change.
The scope of his knowledge, and his insight into the economic and environmental issues which affect our global society, ensure that Dr Cable is an in-demand speaker.
John Wannenburgh of the Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club, whose past guests have Dame Stella Rimington, 'rogue trader' Nick Leeson and Terry Waite CBE, comments, "There could not be a more topical time to invite Vince Cable to the Island. Views attributed to him in relation to International Centres such as the Isle of Man are certainly interesting. This will be an opportunity to have positive dialogue".
The event, to be held at the Mount Murray Hotel and Country Club, has been organised in association with the Institute of Directors (Isle of Man) and sponsored by HSBC. Arrival at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
