Kosovan delegation on Island fact-finding visit

by isleofman.com 21st May 2009

A delegation from the Republic of Kosovo has praised the Isle of Man’s ‘progressive policies’ following a brief fact-finding visit this week.

Headed by Nenad Rasic, Minister for Labour and Social Welfare, the group set out to gain an overview of the Island’s government infrastructure, services and economic strategy.

Minister Rasic and his colleagues attended a series of meetings with senior officials from the departments of Health and Social Security, Education and Trade and Industry during a busy two-day programme.

Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK, who hosted a meeting on Tuesday afternoon, said: ‘We are always keen to foster positive political relations and support our international partners wherever possible.

‘The visiting delegation clearly identified the Isle of Man as a self-reliant nation, with an independent spirit and a thriving economy.

‘Kosovo is seeking to embrace opportunities to encourage new enterprise and stimulate its labour market and looked to the Island for practical advice and guidance.’

The government’s role in supporting the continued growth and diversification of the Manx economy was explored during the visit, along with initiatives to boost the skills set of the local workforce.

Minister Rasic said: ‘Kosovo is a new country, having only recently celebrated its first anniversary of independence. This contrasts sharply with the Isle of Man’s long tradition of self-governance.

‘In life, the young must learn from those who are more experienced and our visit to the Isle of Man has proved extremely beneficial.

‘In the past, the Island has overcome many of the challenges that now face Kosovo and this trip has given us an opportunity to discuss your progressive policies and approach.’
