Engineering students of the future have joined forces at an event organised by the Manx Electricity Authority.

Based at the Barrool Suite in government offices, it was attended by head teachers, parents and students from the Island’s High Schools as well as apprentices from the engineering sector.

Students were treated to a first class view of the Red Arrows and were also given advice and literature from the IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) who were promoting the TTXGP Electric Bike Race at the TT.

Mary Donovan of the IET said: ‘The days of an engineer being seen as a person who wears a boiler suit are long gone and with such innovative ideas as the TTXGP on the Isle of Man, the future for engineering is looking extremely bright.’

Students were also given the opportunity to tour the Tynwald Buildings, guided by MEA chairman, Quintin Gill MHK and deputy chairman, Eddie Lowey MLC.

Mr Gill said: ‘This has been an extremely worthwhile event and something we hope we can do again next year. MEA’s main function in supporting the Island is dominated by engineering and it was pleasing to see our team give up their time to talk to potential engineers of the future.’

Young engineer David Kelly also correctly answered the quiz and was the lucky name out of the hat on the night to win an XBox360.

His prize was accepted by CRHS deputy head teacher, John Binns, on his behalf from clerk of Tynwald Roger Phillips.
