The treasurer of Junior Achievement Isle of Man has had first-hand experience of the challenges posed by Junior Achievement’s company programme.
Sarah Sanders, who took over as partner in charge of the Isle of Man office of Deloitte on 1st June following the retirement of Nick Evans, entered the company programme while still a student at Ballakermeen High School.
Sarah comments, ‘Like many of the students we heard from at this year’s JA Isle of Man Company of the Year finals, I remember the challenges I and my fellow students faced during the programme when we didn’t always agree with one another, and how important it was to work as a team.
‘The whole concept of Junior Achievement is very important for 'Isle of Man PLC'. It’s about making young people aware of the world of business and finance, and alerting them to opportunities in the careers market.
‘What’s especially valuable about Junior Achievement is that it offers something for everyone and for all abilities and creates a general awareness of the world we live in.
‘The flagship company programme promotes team work and develops leadership skills - it also demonstrates that life isn’t always that easy – while the more junior levels, such as the Learn to Earn programme, help children understand the components needed to create their chosen quality of life.
‘Deloitte is very supportive of JA Isle of Man and is pleased to provide volunteers, as we view our participation in the programme as investing in the local community, to the extent that one of our assistant managers, Hannah Smith, was mentor to the winning team in this year’s Company of the Year finals, 'Element' from Ballakermeen High School.
‘For my part, I find my role as treasurer and being a member of the board extremely rewarding.
'The board has a good mix of experienced individuals in leadership positions, all of whom are very enthusiastic about and committed to JA Isle of Man.’
