The firm responsible for the design of the Isle of Man Children’s Centre’s new complex has been praised by the charity’s Chief Executive, John Knight.
The building, which links all the IOMCC’s functions and provides a reception centre and series of flexible multi-purpose spaces, was designed and project managed by chartered architect David Millar of Ramsey-based Dalrymple Associates.
John Knight said, "The new complex creates a positive image of the Isle of Man Children’s Centre.
"The flow between the new and the two existing buildings is seamless and, importantly, with some 140 staff in total, we now have space to deliver courses on-site thanks to the new building’s exceptional versatility."
Mr Millar said, "The site sits within the Woodbourne Road section of the Upper Douglas Conservation Area which consists of mostly Edwardian and Victorian buildings. My approach was not to replicate the style of the existing buildings but to design a building that was of today’s spirit and time.
"Timber construction using heavily insulated panels made the building quick to erect, kept noise and dust to a minimum and limited disruption to the operation of the Centre.
"The building has a very high level of thermal insulation, heating is via an air to water heat pump and most light sources are of low energy type, all of which will help keep running costs low.
"The new building unifies the two existing buildings or 'pavilions' and creates a welcoming 'public face' for the Isle of Man Children’s Centre.
"Rather than resort to pastiche, the unashamedly contemporary design of this 'third pavilion', with its light and transparent façade, enhances the quality of the conservation area and does not compete with the traditional style of the adjoining properties."
Mr Knight added, "We are extremely pleased we went with David’s vision and contemporary approach. His design has provided everything we needed."
