The Steam Packet has confirmed last night's sailing to Heysham had to turn back to the Island, in turn cancelling the return trip in the early hours of this morning.
Patchy fog was forecast for the Heysham area, but by the time the Ben-my-Chree was nearing the port, the fog had unexpectedly worsened.
The vessel stood off Heysham, given the possibility of improving visibility.
However, conditions did not get better and resulted in the closure of the port.
The Ben-my-Chree started sailing back to Douglas at around 1.30am and arrived at 4.30am.
The Steam Packet says it did all it could to minimise inconvenience for the passengers booked on this morning's return 2.15am sailing.
Chief Executive, Mark Woodward has apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the enforced changes to their schedule.
He says the vessel's crew and staff at Heysham endeavoured to make passengers as comfortable as possible and they are assisting them to rearrange their travel plans.
