ILS Fiduciaries gives a helping hand to QEII High School adventurers

by isleofman.com 19th July 2010

ILS Fiduciaries has given Queen Elizabeth II High School Duke of Edinburgh students a boost by providing them with equipment.

The local corporate and trust service provider bought three-man tents, kayaking dry bags and rucksacks for the school.

And the students will get good use out of the equipment as the forthcoming Gold Award expedition will see 17 students visiting Greenland.

ILS finance and operations director David Slack said: "The Duke of Edinburgh Award is probably the most highly regarded initiative that exists for developing young people around the world.

"It helps prepare our young people for the life challenges that lie ahead of them and equips them with a great many of the tools and skills that they will need to meet and surmount these challenges.

"The profile of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme is such that we, as an international business, regard it as an honour to have the opportunity to be associated with it. As ILS Fiduciaries are only too aware of the dedication, efforts and energy that the award leaders put into running this, we are delighted to augment their contributions to the scheme by adding our own.

"Hopefully this can go some way to ensuring that the scheme continues to thrive and remain readily accessible to future generations here on the Isle of Man."

Lesley Sleight, teacher and Duke of Edinburgh Award leader at the Peel school, said: "This generous sponsorship couldn’t have come at a better time. We have enrolled 79 students this year over the various Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, so the new equipment will get a lot of use.

"As a non-profit organisation, the school has to raise their own money to buy any required equipment. Some of the older equipment is becoming very tired and some of it is very much on its last legs. On behalf of the students, I would like to thank ILS for their generosity in purchasing these items. Their support and help has been priceless and the equipment will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to us."

The upcoming Gold Award expedition will see 17 gold award students visiting south Greenland.

The students will spend 12 days kayaking the southern region of the country, covering more than 240kms.

They will then undertake a four-day trek to the ice cap, marking trails for the Narsarsuaq Tourist board, while also undertaking a project, taking samples of trees, observing growth rings and assessing climate change.

The equipment was presented to the students by ILS finance and operations director David Slack and new business assistant Darren Quirk at a recent Greenland warm-up evening held at the school.
