UK Girl Guides taking part in a trek around the Island were able to phone home to get their exam results thanks to gifts from Manx Telecom.

One hundred Girl Guides aged 16 to 26 are walking 100 miles around the Island’s coastline to celebrate 100 years of Girlguiding.

The event is called the Ultimate Isle of Man Challenge and while away from home some of the girls were worrying about their GCSE results as they took part in the trek.

Thanks to gifts of SIM packs from Manx Telecom the girls were able to phone home to the UK to get their results without incurring roaming charges on their own mobile phone networks.

Island Commissioner for Girlguiding Isle of Man Sandy Kermode said: "We'd like to say a huge thank you to Manx Telecom for supplying SIM cards for the girls to use in their phones while on the Island.

"This has been particularly useful in letting some of the younger walkers call home to get their GCSE results.

"We have been getting tremendous assistance from both businesses and individuals in hosting this Centenary Challenge which has let us showcase the Island and all it has to offer.

"We hope the girls and adults taking part will take away many happy memories of their visit and will want to bring their units back with them in the future."

One of the girls visiting the Island - Hannah Farley from East Anglia - gained 10 'A' Star grades. The Girl Guides began their walk on August 21 and are due to finish their lap of the Island on Sunday.
