Manx-based businessman John Whittaker is in China this week, with the United Kingdom's prime minister and business secretary.

The head of the Peel Group is joining David Cameron and Vince Cable on a trade mission to the country.

Mr Whittaker has spent some time in China recently as he raises cash for a multi-billion pound Merseyside regeneration scheme called Peel Waters.

As well as the mrime Minister, Mr Whittaker will accompany several more big-hitters from the coalition government, including Chancellor George Osborne, Energy Secretary Chris Huhne and Education Secretary Michael Gove.

Jason Roberts reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

The Peel Group says it has long recognised the strategic advantage of developing strong business links with China, to ensure the UK is seen as a place where business can be done.

In a statement, the company says establishing beneficial relationships with China, in areas such as international trade, low carbon energy, or economic and social regeneration projects, is key to maximising the vast opportunities with Chinese businesses.

Mr Cameron described the trip as 'vitally important', and the three days of talks will see the countries hold a joint economic trade commission, an economic and financial dialogue, and a business summit.
