Police investigating seal disturbance in the south

by isleofman.com 11th November 2010

WILDLIFE crime officers are investigating after receiving reports of someone disturbing seals in the south of the Island.

Police have received two reports of someone accessing Kitterland, between the Sound and the Calf of Man, on foot from a boat.

The incidents happened during the day on Saturday, October 16, and Saturday, November 6.

On both occasions it is believed that a number of people witnessed the activity from the Sound.

PC Ian Scott said: "Further to recent media releases on the issues concerning seals this serves as a timely reminder to all that seals are protected under The Wildlife Act 1990 from intentional or reckless disturbance and as such these animals should not be approached.

"At this time of year this is especially relevant as seals are giving birth to pups and there may well be dependent young within any seal colony.

"The fact that a number of reports were made concerning the incidents on Kitterland makes it clear that the activities of these individuals caused significant concern at the time."

Anyone with information is asked to contact either PC Ian Scott or PC Mark Kerruish at Peel Police Station on 01624 842208 or via e-mail at wildlifecrime@gov.im.
