CASTLETOWN police are investigating the theft of a large quantity of domestic heating oil from the rear garden of a home in Janet's Corner.
The oil was taken between the end of October and the start of this month and would have required a large vehicle and storage containers to remove it.
A police spokesman said: "Unfortunately this is quite a common occurrence Island wide and increases as the weather gets colder.
"Members of the public are urged to closely monitor the levels of their oil and compare it with their household consumption of such to identify any large loss and to take some basic security measures such as locks on their tanks or outside sensor lights to prevent becoming victims of a crime of this nature.
"Also check that your household insurance would cover you for theft of such from your gardens and surrounding areas.
"If anyone tries to sell you small quantities of oil be aware it is likely to have been obtained unlawfully and you should refuse and contact the police with details of those persons responsible so that we can put a stop such crimes."
Anyone with information should contact PC Louise Kennaugh at Castletown Police Station on 832222.
