Seminar on The Responsibilities of a Director on the Isle of Man

by isleofman.com 17th January 2011

A FREE seminar which will give a detailed insight into the responsibilities of a director in the Isle of Man is being staged at the Palace Hotel in June for local members of the ACCA.

The event is being hosted by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), which 140,000 members and 404,000 students, and a well supported local branch on the Island.

Guest speaker will be Ann Clayton who qualified as a chartered director in 2004 and has a number of non-executive directorships, one as chairman. She was also a director of a successful and active local charity for 12 years, three of them as chairman. In addition, she was a member of the team which produced the 2006 report on the Scope and Structure of the Isle of Man Government.

A spokesman for the local branch of ACCA said, “Much is written and talked about corporate governance, particularly in the light of some public failures. This seminar will look at the responsibilities of directors and the board, both in terms of the legal aspects and the Combined Code, as they relate to the Isle of Man.

“However, being a director is not just about responsibility, it is also about effectiveness and leadership. Therefore, time will also be spent looking at how a board can optimise its effectiveness including considering such aspects as structure and practices, use of non-executive directors, crisis management, etc. Some examples of board failure will be examined.

“The desired outcome of the seminar is that attendees will see the duties and performance of the board as adding real value to the organisation and not just being a thorn in the side of the executive team.”

Ann Clayton has 25 years management experience, 15 of them in executive director or senior management positions, in companies ranging from small local to large international. She was one of the original group of six executive directors who launched Clerical Medical International in 1986 and moved to the Isle of Man to set up their administration base.

She has developed and implemented business plans both for new organisations and for the restructuring of existing organisations. Her experience spans sectors such as finance, manufacturing, and retail.

She now works as a management consultant and has been a sessional lecturer at the International Business School since 2005, delivering courses to directors and managers.

An online booking system will be open shortly on the ACCA website www.accaglobal.com
