Death of air crash survivor

by isleofman.com 27th January 2011

Former Mayor, and Freeman of the Borough of Douglas, Fred Kennish has died, aged 86.

Mr Kennish, who was a survivor of the Winter Hill air disaster in Lancashire in the 1950s, passed away at Noble's Hospital earlier this week.

He was Mayor in the 1989 to 90 municipal year, and was made a Freeman in 2005.

In his mid-30s he was one of seven people to survive the crash at Winter Hill, in which 35 men from the Island lost their lives.

He recounted the experience to Roger Watterson in a programme to mark the 40th anniversary of the tragedy, in February 1998 (play audio file):

Fred Kennish leaves a wife, Connie, a daughter and three sons.

There will be a requiem mass at St Mary's Church, in Hill Street, Douglas, at 12 noon this Saturday, January 29, followed by interment at Braddan cemetery.
