Resignation call in Jersey over Zero-ten

by isleofman.com 11th February 2011

There are calls for Jersey's treasury minister to resign after the Channel Island fell behind the Isle of Man on tax transparency.

Deputy Geoff Southern of the Jersey Democratic Alliance, is calling for Philip Ozouf to step down, claiming the Channel Island's Zero-ten tax policy is unworkable after the European Union condemned it.

But St Helier Deputy Mr Southern says Jersey has been targeted by the United Kingdom and any UK tax avoiders with money in the Channel Island would have to pay twice the amount of cash they owed if they were discovered by HM Revenue and Customs.

In the Isle of Man, anybody found evading UK tax would have to pay back the amount owed rather than a multiple, which led to the accusation Jersey was lagging behind.
