Benefits and state pensions to rise

Benefits and state pensions will go up from April 11.

The basic state pension is to rise by ?4.50 a week, while the weekly rate of the pension supplement will increase by ?2.20.

Income-related benefits are to be increased by 4.1 per cent, which the Department of Social Care says will benefit around 5,000 individuals and their families who receive those benefits, including some 1,600 pensioners.

Social Care Minister Martyn Quayle explains how this has been possible, considering the huge cuts in government spending elsewhere:
