New DVD is an insight on Joey Dunlop's life

by isleofman.com 30th November 2011

A NEW documentary DVD on the life of Joey Dunlop, giving an insight into the private life of the most successful TT rider in history, is being released by Duke Video before Christmas.

Presented and narrated by the BBC’s Stephen Watson and endorsed by the Dunlop family, No Ordinary Joe includes tributes from Joey’s wife Linda and daughters, plus famous racing names including John McGuinness, Steve Parrish and Phillip McCallen.

Never-before-published pictures of the Ballymoney hero, provided from his family’s private collection, are also included.

Poignant interviews, family memories and personal recollections from friends, teammates, fans and fellow racers reveal the ‘real’ Joey Dunlop who’s career statistics are legendary; a five-times world champion, 26-times Isle of Man TT winner, 24-times Ulster Grand Prix winner and 14-times North West 200 winner.

The DVD discovers the less well known, private Joey; a much-loved husband, father and brother, a dedicated charity worker, a compassionate and down to earth man unaffected by his worldwide fame.

From the Waldovision team behind the critically acclaimed BBC documentaries ‘Joey Dunlop – Remembered’ and ‘How the North West was Won’, the new film includes unseen material and additional footage, and looks back at Joey’s life a decade after his tragic death, killed in a racing

crash aged 48.

Produced by brothers Alwyn and Colin James and Directed by Anna Masefield, there are deeply personal tributes, memories of his humanitarian work and hilarious anecdotes, including stories about Joey’s encounter with frozen beans, a night in the European fog and why the police were chasing Joey Dunlop.

Alongside insightful interviews with Joey, never previously broadcast, is racing footage from the TT, Ulster GP, North West and national road races in the Republic of Ireland. Plus, there’s footage of Linda’s trip to Japan and a visit to the Kushitani factory, where Joey’s leather designs are still retained.

‘No Ordinary Joe’ includes previously unseen DVD extras, including an amusing story about Joey teaching his brother Jim to fall correctly when the bike was crashing, Barry Symmons explaining why Joey kept running out of petrol in the Isle of Man and World Superbike star Eugene Laverty recalling seeing hero Joey racing.

In addition, there is the story of how Joey won using a secret over-sized petrol tank, Phillip McCallen revealing how he first loaned bike parts to Joey, extended coverage of Linda’s Japan visit, including a look around the Honda Museum, and much more.

Joey Dunlop – No Ordinary Joe is released 12 December 2011 on DVD, priced at £19.99 and will be available from leading video outlets or direct from Duke Video: Tel 01624 640 000 or email mail@dukevideo.com or visit www.dukevideo.com.
